Diabetes X-Pert Posted on 8 Apr 2021

We are offering an exciting opportunity to be part of a pilot project for the Diabetes X-pert programme in Regis practices. If you are interested in learning more about your diabetes and in particular how to manage your health using dietary approach and aiming to put your diabetes into remission without drugs, then please read the info below.

What is the Programme?

COVID-19 has probably more than any other disease alerted us to the importance of reducing risk factors and focusing on staying healthy. By improving lifestyle factors, such as diet and eating habits, we can slow the progression of lifestyle related disese into remission, thereby removing this significant factor.

We are delighted to announce that the surgeries within REGIS PCN will embark on a pilot scheme to work with the clinically trialled X-PERT Diabetes Health structured and fun programme.

Who can join?

If you have Diabetes Type 2 you are invited by a nurse or GP to join the programme and are encouraged to bring a supporter or partner to the sessions, if that works for you.

What is Involved?

Participation involves attending a regular weekly on-line 1.5 to 2.5 – hour Group Consultation, for a period of 6 – 15 weeks, depending on which programme you attend.

How long does it go on for?

Beyond the pilot scheme, we hope we may be able to extend the support session, to give you time to learn, understand and develop new health-supporting eating habits and tastes, and to deal with relapse prevention. This depends to a certain extent on how successful the pilot scheme is and future funding. Those who achieve remission of their Diabetes Type 2 symptons with no need for continued medication, are not required to continue attending, but are welcome to stay involved with the group as it suits them.

What should I expect from it?

You can expect to learn about the lifestyle factors and nutrition that can cause and exacerbate Diabetes Type 2 and weight gain, and that prevent you from losing weight and controlling blood glucose. We focus on changes to diet and lifestyle to lower blood glucose and fat storage in a natural way, and to stop disease into remission.

You will face challenges to your current habits and will have to take tough decisions. But you will get support from other patients facing similar challenges, the course tutor Heidi and volunteer ‘buddies’.

To be referred to this programme, you need to answer ‘yes’ to the following questions:

  • Do you have, and use, a smart phone/tablet (I-pad)/Chromebook or laptop?
  • Would you like to learn how to put your diabetes into remission, (reduce weight) and reduce your medication?
  • Are you ready to make significant changes to your diet?
  • Are you available to regularly attend an on-line course on Wednesdays at 1pm – 3.30pm or Thursdays 6pm – 7.30pm?

NB. You will be given help to use your electronic equipment to attend the sessions. It is not at all difficult.

If you have answered ‘Yes’ to the above questions and would like to be referred to the programme, please contact the surgery and ask to book a phone appointment with either Judy or Nina, make sure you mention it is to discuss Diabetes X-Pert
